Chemical bonding!
This is a 4 lesson course on the fundamental chemistry topic of bonding. We look at the different types of bonding and how this relates to the structure and properties of materials. A nice introduction to GCSE science or materials science to help you to understand the different substances in our environment.
Lesson 1 looks at the formation of ions and how the electronic structure of elements relates to their positions in the periodic table and the charge of their ions.
Lesson 2 looks more in depth at ionic substances and why they have the properties they do.
Lesson 3 with a small practical demonstration shows how ionic and covalent substances compare to each other. You will need some chocolate, some salt, some water and some oil, 2 cups or beakers and a few spoons if you would like to try too.
Lesson 4 looks at metals and the bonding that occurs within them with another quick demonstration of the conduction of heat. This is a version of a GCSE practical that you can carry out at home with a cup of hot water, a metal spoon, a wooden spoon, a plastic spoon, some vaseline and some paper clips or drawing pins.
